(Here are some basic definitions) Research: Capital to fund research with the objective of clarifying the market opportunity, identifying competition, and defining the factors that will determine success. Seed Stage: A relatively small amount of capital provided to start development and prove a concept. It rarely involves initial marketing. Start-up: Financing for launch having already completed proof of concept and primary development. First Stage: Financing to expand operations, often focused on the first significant investment in marketing. Buyout (LBO/MBO): Funds provided to enable operating management to acquire a product line or business, which may be at any stage of development, from either a public or private company.
